Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 (Sony FE) - Review / Test

Rapport performances / prix : 3,5/5

Citation de: Klaus Schroiff pour PhotozoneThe Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 is an excellent ultra-wide prime lens. Most of the image frame is already very sharp at fully open aperture although there is a bit of softness in the far corners. The corner softness is gone at f/4. The range between f/4 and f/5.6 is also the sweet spot where the quality is truly outstanding for a lens in this class. It may be a little surprising but you should stick to f/8 (if possible) instead of f/11 for the best quality in infinity DoF scenes because diffraction is a limiting factor already. Very low lateral CAs and marginal field curvature also contribute to the very high quality. Image distortions aren't overly pronounced but complex (mustache-style). In critical situations you may prefer to enable image auto-correction for this. That also applies to vignetting which is on the very high side (typical for Zeiss). A real differentiator is the flare resistance. You can, of course, produce a few ghostings if you push it but the Zeiss is about as good as it gets in terms of contra-light performance in this segment.

The build quality is up to professional standards - a metal body, no wobbly parts, weather sealing - but at this price level we expected no less, of course. That being said, we are not a big fan of the slippery surface coating and the dismal quality of the lens cap. The AF speed is good albeit not extremely fast but that's perfectly fine given the typical usage patterns with such a lens. Zeiss is quite proud of the new OLED display which shows you the focus distance and depth-of-field. Yes, it's nice, it's cool but the real killer argument is the image quality.

So should you buy one? We'll do some more testing of ultra-wide lenses soon but we'd be surprised to see a lens that could outperform this Zeiss lens - therefore highly recommended!

Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 - Review / Test Report | Optical Limits

Rapport performances / prix : 3,5/5

Citation de: Klaus Schroiff pour Optical LimitsThe Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 is one of the best lenses that we have reviewed so far. It isn't just a sharp lens. It is excessively sharp even at fully open aperture. Low CAs add to the goodness. That being said - it is not a perfect lens. Image distortions and vignetting are weak spots making it almost necessary to take advantage of Sony's image auto-correction. The quality of the bokeh is very good but there are a few lenses out there that are better still. That also applies to bokeh fringing which is on the high side.

The build quality is up to professional standards - a metal body, no wobbly parts, weather sealing - that's all excellent. However, we are still no big fans of the slippery surface coating, the dust catching focus ring and the dismal quality of the lens cap. The AF speed is good albeit not extremely fast. The OLED display on the lens is a looker for sure ... whether it's really useful may be a different question.

Even when taking its downsides into account - the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 is an awesome lens. Therefore ... highly recommended!

Essai du Zeiss Batis Distagon T* 18 mm f/2,8 sur Sony Alpha 7 III par John Riley pour ePHOTOzine :

Zeiss Batis Distagon 18mm f/2.8 T* Review | ePHOTOzine (3 + 1 pages)

Points forts :

- excellent piqué
- faibles niveaux d'aberrations chromatiques
- flare bien contrôlé
- bons niveaux de distorsion
- vignetage modeste
- autofocus rapide et silencieux
- protection contre les intempéries
- léger et relativement compact
- fabrication de haute qualité.

Point faible :

- prix.

Citation de: John Riley, ePHOTOzineThe Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 is an excellent ultra-wide lens for Sony Full Frame mirrorless cameras.

There is no doubt that Zeiss makes some very fine lenses. It is also a pleasure to have a range of AF lenses as well, and the Batis 18mm fits beautifully on the Sony E system cameras. 18mm lenses are not the easiest to use and do need working at. Apart from the potential for indoor architecture, the sweeping vistas of the landscape will usually only look good if the foreground is powerful as well. Otherwise, mountains may look very small in the background. So as a general rule, we need to get in and then get in closer. An example is the picture of the stag, which was shot from only about three feet away and yet the creature takes up just a small part of the frame.

Those who want a lens to match their existing Zeiss optics will of course not find it a difficult decision and they will be rewarded with a superb lens.

Merci , Mistral !
