"The Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 is entering a busy segment of the market. It has some interesting value propositions but the pricing is, unfortunately, very bold. At 900US$ it better has to be excellent. Now while the lens is certainly good, it stays somewhat short of this expectation at least. The center quality is great and the borders are also very sharp at mainstream settings. The extreme corners aren't quite as convincing though. They are downright soft at f/2.8 and it's a good idea to stop down to f/4, better f/5.6 where the results are decent. The vignetting is also higher than usual especially at f/2.8. A downright stellar performance is the lack of distortion - probably the best ever measured quality here and we are talking about the native characteristic and not about a digitally corrected result.

The mechanical qualities are also impressive. It feels like a lens from the good ol' days - in a positive way. The lens body is made of metal and the controls are smooth as silk. As aspect that is probably going to be less popular is the lack of AF and an electronically couple aperture. However, thanks to its unique Dual Link Iris, the aperture ring can be changed to a movie-friendly mode (smooth settings rather than clicks) so this makes some sense at least.

Convincing mainstream MFT users of this lens is probably going to be a bit tough especially at this price point. Movie makers have different priorities regarding the AF and aperture handling though and we could well imagine that the Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 will find some friends here. "

"The Kowa Prominar MFT 25mm f/1.8 faces a difficult task especially given its price tag of 800US$. The 25mm segment is covered by a variety of lenses which are either much faster, much cheaper or both. However, the Kowa lens has at least one advantage - optical performance. The image quality is decent at max. aperture but when stopping down it is about as good as it gets on the micro four thirds system. The low level of lateral chromatic aberrations contribute to the subjective quality perception. There's some vignetting at f/1.8 but not much beyond. Image distortions are also on the low side.

Le 25mm Kowa: aucun sens. Lourd, cher, gros, pas d'AF, qualité optique qui n'a rien d'exceptionnelle, pas de corrections auto. Bref, je ne vois pas pourquoi ils en vendraient, face au 25 Pana et au Oly. Le Voigt Nokton, apporte au moins, une qualité optique au top, et une ouverture exceptionnelle. Idem pour le 8,5mm. Pour vendre en MFT, en marques complémentaires, il faut proposer la meilleure qualité optique possible, si possible AF, petit, et éventuellement ouverture meilleure, et tarif mesuré: Sigma et Voigtlander, Samyang, proposent des choses achetables ...

"The Kowa Prominar MFT 12mm f/1.8 is the weakest offering in the Kowa lineup. The pure MTFs are actually quite decent. The center is always sharp at the mainstream settings and the outer image region is relatively decent at f/1.8, good at f/2.8 and very good between f/4 and f/8. However, field curvature is a major issue at large apertures so in the real life the results are less convincing here - at least in our sample which wasn't really well centered. Typical for the three initial Prominar lenses, both the distortion as well as the lateral CAs are low which is good because image auto-correction isn't possible. The amount of vignetting is generally on the high side though.

So where does this leave us? Honestly, for mainstream photography we'd rather stick to the Olympus M.Zuiko 12mm f/2. For movies we are having some doubts here as well - in this scope it faces some headwind from the Samyang 12mm T2.2 VDSLR NCS CS for instance. Thus we don't really see a compelling value proposition here. "

The Kowa Prominar 8.5mm f/2.8 is a classy looking lens, it's beautifully made and the results are excellent. AF would make focusing much easier, but it can be worked around and still leave the lens being very satisfying to use. At least with the large amount of depth of field available there is some leeway at longer distances.

In summary, it's a great lens that is delightful in use and delivers the goods.

The Kowa Prominar 12mm f/1.8 is a classy looking lens. It's beautifully made and the results are excellent. AF could be a useful addition, but on the other hand we have an easy to focus lens here that presents none of the focusing difficulties of its 8.5mm sibling.

It's expensive perhaps compared to some, but looks excellent value against the Voigtlander 10.5mm f/0.95, unless that extra bit of speed is needed.

It's a very compelling lens to use, very much the traditional 24mm (in full frame terms) with all its inherent versatility.

It would be difficult to argue against the usefulness of a 25mm fast lens on MFT format. As is true of any standard lens on any format, performance is very high and the focal length is very versatile.

The quality is not in question, but compared to a massive selection of alternative also very fine lenses the price does look high. This is especially true as the lens is manual focus. This leaves us looking very hard at the performance and general characteristics. For some, the price will not be an obstacle if the Kowa Prominar gives the desired "look" to the images. For others, there are a wide variety of choices, largely excellent as well in their various ways.
