11. Summary
Pros:

    * huge, solid, weather-sealed casing,
    * sensational image quality in the frame centre,
    * sensible image quality on the edge of the frame in the 12–16 mm range,
    * slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,
    * low lateral chromatic aberration,
    * silent and very fast autofocus.

Cons:

    * a bit too high coma,
    * very high distortion for RAW files,
    * significant vignetting for RAW files, resistant to stopping down.

I admit my feelings are mixed. On the one hand you deal here with a fast, ultra wide angle zoom instrument closed in a solid, weather-resistant casing, very difficult to design and produce. It is able to provide sensational image quality in the frame centre. Still if you take a closer look you start noticing problems. When a lens costs almost $2000 being notably more expensive than the Nikkor AF-S 14–24 mm f/2.8 or the Sigma A 12–24 mm f/4 DG HSM, you don't want to tolerate any compromises. Also when you find out that the optics specialists gave up distortion correction in order to get more slack when it comes to correction of other aberrations you might expect a perfect, ideal performance in all other categories. Only you don't get it. The coma level is a bit too jarring, astigmatism can be momentarily rather bothersome and you see rather significant vignetting levels for RAW files, weakly influenced by stopping down of the aperture. A very modest accessory kit is, I suppose, the last drop of bitterness. If the producer adds just a piece of cloth instead of a solid case to a lens costing almost $2000 it's really an exaggeration.

When the launch of the Fujinon XF 8–16 mm f/2.8 R LM WR was announced I was very enthusiastic. Then we got to know its price and I thought that only brilliant performance in the majority of testing categories might keep me feeling that way. After the test I find the number of small slip-ups of this lens a bit too high so, I suppose, only lowering of price can help. Of course it doesn't change the fact the Fujinon remains a very well-done and optically good lens.

J'ai noté que l'échelle des distances dans le viseur du XT2 et ce zoom est complètement à la ramasse, pour cette image elle indiquait 0,50 m... (mise au point AFS un collimateur...).
Pour faire le point à l'infini en astro sur des étoiles, va pas falloir compter sur cette échelle...

Non, c'est toi. On sait tous que si on est derrière le matériel et pas devant c'est qu'on est mal foutu.

C'est normal avec ce type d'optique, c'est l'anamorphose de volume . Quel intérêt pour un 8-16 mm sachant que la plage de focale est très proche de l'excellent 10-24 mm ?
L'ouverture à 2.8 versus 4.0 et WR ?

Cela justifie t il de substituer le 10 24 mm et de payer le "petit" nouveau au prix affiché? Avec de surcroît un encombrement et un poids en hausse sensible
A titre personnel - usage expert mais non professionnel- la réponse est évidement NON

Déjà le 10-24 pique pas mal ...
Pour ma part, payer le double de prix, pour un range qui ne plait pas trop : maitriser un 12 mm sur un FF c'est pas facile ...

The new Fujifilm XF 8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR takes the title of being the best wide-angle zoom lens in the Fujifilm XF range from the older XF 10-24mm optic.

Compared to the existing XF 10-24mm lens, the Fuji XF-16mm offers a wider angle of view, is one aperture stop faster, and is also fully weather-sealed. On the flip-side, unlike the 10-24mm it doesn't feature built-in image stabilisation, it's bigger and weighs twice as much, it costs almost twice as much, and it doesn't accept screw-in filters.

In terms of image quality, the XF 8-16mm is razor-sharp throughout its zoom and aperture range in the centre of the image, and acceptably sharp from f/4 onwards at the edges, out-performing the XF 10-24 F4 lens by quite a margin.

Vignetting is practically a non-issue, and chromatic aberrations are only noticeable by their almost complete absence. Barrel distortion is also very well controlled, even at 8mm, an amazing performance given the ultra-wide-angle focal length.

The close-focus point of 25cm comes in handy when including foreground interest in the image, as you often do in landscape and architectural photography, or for taking close-up street photos, while it is possible to creatively throw the background out of focus using the maximum F2.8 aperture.

The Fujifilm XF 8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR's linear-motor-driven auto-focus system is fast and quiet. As with most Fujifilm lenses, it features a very welcome aperture ring which makes it quick, easy and precise to set this key element of exposure, especially as the aperture values are marked on the lens (unlike the XF 10-24mm). Note that there is no focusing distance scale with depth-of-field markings to make it easier to zone-focus.

£1799.99 / $1999.95 is a lot of money to pay for any wide-angle lens in any camera system, be it APS-C or Full-frame, making the Fujifilm XF 8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR a lens for the fully committed land/city-scape or astro photographer. If you can't stretch to the XF 8-16mm, the older 10-24mm F4 lens is still worth considering - it's smaller, lighter, cheaper, longer, stabilised, and supports much more affordable screw-in filters. If you want the ultimate wide-angle lens for your Fuji camera, though, the new XF 8-16mm F2.8 R LM WR is the one to get.

The Fujifilm XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR is the widest option for Fujifilm X cameras, with superb image quality and great handling.

There are an increasing number of superb lenses on the market, and the quality of results from these can be amazing, but the tendency has been for not only increasing standards but inevitably increasing costs. This tricky balance is for the individual to decide – an equation between cost, quality and of course the depth of our pockets.

Fujifilm's new Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR lens is gorgeous, at a price, and inevitably it scores highly, in this instance being Highly Recommended.

Je cherche un objectif pour faire des astro .... J'ai pensé au 8-16 ça vaut le coup pour des photos astro de nuit? autrement j'ai pensé aux:

samyang 12 mm f2 (en combinaison avec le 10-24 ou avec le prix des deux je prend le 8-16?)
