Le développement du 14-24 mm f/2,8 DG HSM | Art a été annoncé par Sigma ce matin :

Le  service de changement de la partie avant (Front Conversion Service) correspond à la possibilité de faire remplacer par Sigma le pare-soleil pétale intégré par un élément circulaire qui ne fait pas office de pare-soleil mais permet un montage multi-objectifs pour des tournages de réalité virtuelle (avec le pare-soleil, les objectifs projetteraient des zones d'ombre dans le champ couvert par leurs voisins).

Addressing the rising popularity of multi-camera productions, especially using ultra wide-angle lenses in shooting virtual reality (VR) content, Sigma has introduced its Front Conversion Service. Converting the petal-type hood of the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art to an exclusive round component allows for the lens to be used in various VR scenarios without the risk of interfering with other lenses in the VR rig or undesired shadows in the content.

décidément Sigma est très actif et propose de très bons produits en "art/sport" (optique et qualité de fabrication) . Il ne manque plus grand chose dans la gamme... un tilt shift? un 600/800mm?

Je dirais que par l'existence dans sa gamme UGA de ces 2 zooms, Sigma vise ainsi à concurrencer aussi bien le fameux Canon 11-24/4 L que le, fameux lui également, Nikon 14-24/2.8 ... .

Grâce à Sigma donc, le canoniste qui lorgnait sur un 14-24 lumineux et le nikoniste à la recherche d'un zoom UGA le plus grand-angle possible seront désormais comblés en ce domaine ...

Sigma 14-24 essayé chez mon revendeur Camara à Cournon d'Auvergne. Comparatif rapide dans le magasin avec le 12-24 sur D850: à 14mm f:4 dans les deux cas, le dernier né est loin de déformer comme le 12-24, voir même le 14-24 des Jaunes. Etonnant. Après m'être séparé de mon Nikon , celui-ci me fait de l'oeil par son piqué et ses géométries bien mieux respectées...Reste à voir les tests.

The 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art is a surprising, but very welcome, addition to Sigma's ever growing Art range of premium lenses, offering a faster aperture of f/2.8 at the expense of 2mm in focal length when compared to the very similar Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art lens, whilst being cheaper than it's slightly older sibling (at least in the US anyway) and additionally offering much better weather-sealing. Nearest rivals include the 10-year-old Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM and the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, and the Tamron SP 15-30mm f2.8 Di VC USD.

Image quality is excellent. Chromatic aberrations are very well controlled, bokeh is surprisingly good despite the ultra-wide-angle nature of the lens, barrel distortion is impressively well controlled, and the Super Multi-Layer coating successfully prevents contrast loss attributable to flare. The only real optical issues are some obvious vignetting and a slight lack of sharpness when shooting wide-open at f/2.8 throughout the zoom range.

As with all the other recent Art lenses that we've tested, the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art's build quality is once again reassuringly excellent, although it's also one of the heaviest wide-angle zooms that we've ever tested. Auto-focusing is quiet and quick, with the ability to manually override it and focus manually if required proving a nice touch, and the focusing ring is thankfully a lot wider than the slim one on the Sigma 12-24mm F4 lens.

Overall, the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art concedes a couple of mm in wide-angle focal length to its 12-24mm sibling, but gains a faster f/2.8 aperture, better weather-sealing, wider focus ring, less barrel distortion, and, somewhat surprisingly, a lower price-tag, making it worthy of our highest Essential! accolade.

The Sigma company have got us used to the fact that a purchase of any of the Art line lenses means a reliable investment with a guarantee of above-average optics and superior build quality – for a price often lower than in the case of the rivals. Here their task was especially difficult because in the same market segment you can find the excellent Nikkor AF-S 14–24 mm f/2.8G ED and also one of the best Tamron lenses available currently on the market, the Tamron 15–30 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD. What's more, the Tamron launch happened several years ago so its price has managed to settle down on a very reasonable level of $1200. That's why the task of the Sigma, which entered the market with the $1300 price tag, is more difficult. The Sigma offers you a bit wider angle of view than the Tamron but its maximum focal length is shorter and it doesn't have any optical stabilization. It remains optically better, especially on the edges of the sensor near the maximum relative aperture, and its lateral chromatic aberration correction is superior but the difference remains slight; in such a situation for many customers the price still might remain the sole decisive factor. Let's face it, the Tamron is in a more favourable position. As long as the price of the Sigma doesn't decrease a bit, the Tamron might sell better.

The summary of this test should be very optimistic. High quality competition – there's nothing better from the customers' point of view.

The Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM ART maintains the overall characteristic of the Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM ART while providing an extra stop in speed and having a slightly narrower zoom range. The sweet spot - or to be precise: range - is in the low to mid-sections which is a good thing. After all, you aren't buying such a lens for its 24mm setting but for going wide, REALLY wide. The 14mm setting doesn't show any significant weaknesses in resolution. It's usable straight from f/2.8 and impressive at medium apertures. That being said, you have to live with heavy vignetting at f/2.8 and the light-falloff doesn't really disappear when stopping down. The corner quality suffers a bit at 16/20mm f/2.8 but otherwise, the quality remains very high for such a lens. That can't be said of the 24mm setting though. At least on high-resolution sensors, you will have to live with soft corners between f/2.8 and f/5.6. However, the resolution recovers at f/8 and f/11. Image distortions are surprisingly low for such a lens and substantially better than on the 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM ART. Flare is always a big topic among ultra-wide lenses because there's usually always some bright thingy (e.g. the sun) in our scene. Lenses with bulb-like front-elements - such as this Sigma - especially vulnerable because stray light can enter the optical path more easily than on conventional lenses. And yes, the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM ART has its share of issues here. Are they any worse than on similar lenses (from an established player)? Probably not. Truth is that you can force any lens to produce ugly flare effects. If you want to have less flare, you'd have to go for the Canon EF 16-35m f/2.8 USM L III or f/4 USM L IS but these are obviously not quite as wide.

The build quality of the Sigma lens is superb. At least subjectively, it doesn't differ from Canon L class quality. The materials are top notch, everything is tightly assembled and Sigma implemented weather-sealing as well. To be honest, we are big fans of what Sigma is doing here lately. Sigma HSM AF is both fast and near silent. Some may miss the inclusion of an image stabilizer but it is already difficult to maintain a consistent production quality without one. An image stabilizer has always a negative impact on the centering accuracy and such ultra-wide lenses are notoriously tricky in this respect.

In the grand scheme of things, Sigma has produced a winner albeit it isn't flawless. However, to be fair - the presence of flaws is hardly surprising in this specific lens class. The bigger question mark may be whether you are bold enough to carry such a brick. At more than 1.1kg, it's not for the weak. While we surely congratulate Sigma for releasing high-quality lenses into the market, we aren't sure that super-sizing everything for gaining quality is always desirable. It's good for getting fairly high ratings but it reduces the fun factor to some degree - and for most of us, fun is what all this is about.
