The new EF 70-200mm F4L IS II USM represents a major update of Canon's venerable 70-200mm F4 lens, replacing the 12 year old Mark I version by introducing a number of significant improvements.

These most notably include a vastly-improved image stabilization system, reduced minimum focus distance and an improved maximum magnification rating, better weather-sealing, a new 9-blade rounded aperture, and new lens coatings to help reduce flare/ghosting and to assist with keeping the lens clean, topped off with very good image quality when shooting wide-open and outstanding performance from f/5.6-f/11.

All of which makes this the best 70-200mm F4 lens that Canon have ever released, in turn narrowing the gap to the flagship Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS III USM.

If you don't need the faster F2.8 aperture (although that is a pretty compelling feature), then this lens has a lot to offer and very little to complain about, making it easily worthy of our Highly Recommended award.

Canon pense enfin que la majorité des photographes amateurs sont des vieux (car avant, on n'a pas les sous pour s'acheter du bon matos).

Le mode 3 étant fait pour ne pas perturber la visée (et les saccades dans le viseur en mode action) en désactivant la stab jusqu'au déclenchement effectif.

J'ai cherché chez Markins, RRS et Kirk ... mais je n'ai rien trouvé: un collier avec base Arca qui fonctionnerait aussi avec la version I de cet objectif, ça existe ou pas ?

Points forts :
- fût solide et muni de joints
- excellente qualité d'image au centre
- très bonne qualité d'image sur les bords du format APS-C
- bonne qualité d'image sur le bord du format 24x36
- très bon contrôle de l'aberration chromatique longitudinale
- faible aberration chromatique latérale,
- distorsion légère sur capteur APS-C
- pas de problèmes de coma
- pratiquement aucun astigmatisme
- vignetage négligeable sur capteur APS-C
- bokeh plaisant
- autofocus silencieux et précis
- stabilisation optique efficace
- très bonne coopération avec le téléconvertisseur TC 1.4x III.

Points faibles :

- légère aberration sphérique
- les performances en contre-jour auraient pu être un peu meilleures
- vignetage supérieur à celui de ses concurrents directs.

The Canon EF 70–200 mm f/4L IS II USM is undoubtedly an excellent lens. The list of its good points is impressive and the number of flaws- low. What's more, the cons list includes rather small slip-ups than serious disadvantages. Still the rivals aren't idle and, for instance, the  Tamron 70–210 mm f/4 Di VC USD, tested by us last year, can compete with the Canon on equal terms and it remains noticeably cheaper. Currently you have to pay about $1200 for the Canon, twice more than for the Tamron. On the other hand the older version of the stabilized Canon 70-200 mm f/4L costs $300 less than the new instrument so, in fact, it's really worth considering to buy the newer lens.

If you don't like compromises and you are a fan of brand-name lenses the Canon EF 70-200 mm f/4L IS II USM might be a good choice; I don't doubt you'll enjoy using it.
