Remarquable. Directement dans la lignée du 40mm. On peut trouver un peu d'AC latérales et d'astigmatisme dans les angles mais c'est excellent pour un 28mm. Et dire que tout est à PO ! Vivement du raw...
Le poids est très bien contenu finalement pour ce type de gamme.

Pour résumer très rapidement (d'après le test) :
Distorsion : Sigma sans concurrence pour un 28mm.
Piqué : identique au Nikkor ; pas tout à fait à l'Otus.
AC longitudinales : identique à l'Otus, meilleur que le Nikkor.
AC latérales : identique au Nikkor, l'Otus est meilleur.
Coma : pas parfait mais un peu meilleur que l'Otus et meilleur que le Nikkor.
Vignettage : Le Nikkor est le meilleur, l'Otus un peu moins bon que le Sigma.
Résistance au flare : Sigma dernier.
Astigmatisme : Sigma sans concurrence pour un 28mm.
Prix : Le Sigma est le moins cher.

Par rapport au 40mm Art j'y vois un petit peu moins d'aberration sphérique (mais elle suit le même schéma). On dirait (supposition toute personnelle) que chez Sigma la correction de l'AS est inversement proportionnelle à celle de l'AC longitudinale sur les derniers modèles... Sinon le 28mm présente un peu plus d'AC longitudinales, plus d'AC latérales, plus de coma et il pique un peu moins. Mais il est plus compact et plus léger.

Points forts :

- fût solide et élégant
- qualité d'image sensationnelle au centre
- très bonne qualité d'image sur les bords du format APS-C
- bonne qualité d'image sur les bords du format 24x36
- pas de problème d'aberration chromatique longitudinale
- aberration chromatique latérale légère
- distorsion imperceptible, la plus faible dans cette classe d'équipements
- correction raisonnable de la coma
- très faible astigmatisme
- vignetage léger sur capteur APS-C
- bokeh agréable
- autofocus silencieux.

Points faibles :

- très fort vignetage à pleine ouverture en 24x36
- les performances en contre-jour laissent un peu à désirer.

The launch of the Sigma A 28 mm f/1.4 DG HSM was an interesting even, concerning a very demanding segment with fierce competition. First of all, the Sigma has serious rivals among its own Art line, like very well made A 1.4/24 and 1.4/35 models. The new Sigma lens is better than them but also more expensive and bigger – after all, you get nothing for nothing... Still if somebody couldn't make up their mind, what to buy, the 24 mm or the 35 mm, now might choose the 28 mm instrument and enjoy the best image quality of all three.

When it comes to rivals produced by other companies the new Sigma doesn't have it easy either. In this segment the Otus 1.4/28 manufactured by the Zeiss is a kind of show of force. Apart from that, the Nikkor AF-S 28 mm f/1.4G ED happens to be one of the most successful launches of the Nikon in recent years. As a result this trio of lenses performed neck and neck in particular categories, often winning by a hair's breadth. The competition was won slightly by the Otus but you have to remember its physical dimensions and the price, currently amounting to almost $5000. The well-done Nikkor is not cheap either; if you want to buy it you have to spend nearly $2000. Compared to that the Sigma, with a price tag of less than $1400, seems to be a real bargain; mind you, it occupies a very favourable second place, even though we admit its advantage over the more expensive Nikkor was really slight.

Finally one more remark. The tested model was launched along with the Sigma A 40 mm f/1.4 DG HSM, a lens optically outstanding but really big and heavy. I've been wondering why Sigma didn't reduce physical dimensions of the 40 mm device and they clearly did the opposite in the case of the noticeably smaller 28 mm lens. A 1.4/28 instrument is much more difficult to design than a 1.4/40; it would be only natural to expect that the former would be bigger and heavier than the latter, in order to avoid too many compromises. Sigma decided to optimize weight and dimensions of the 28 mm lens to a certain point and produced an optically weaker instrument than the outstanding 40 mm.

Franchement, est-ce bien raisonnable de nos jours de mesurer un très haut de gamme sur un capteur de 22 Mpxl seulement avec "une bonne qualité sur les bords" quand c'est "sensationnel au centre" ? Pour le MDLP je le passe sur 5D SR et là on verra s'il est au niveau stupéfixiant de piqué des récents 40 et 105...

A lens with fine character as well as superb performance.

There is a lot to love about a fine 28mm lens that has such a fast, bright maximum aperture, for all sorts of shooting applications. The lens handles well, focuses precisely and produces superb results. The price seems to fairly reflect the quality that is on offer, and what is on offer is a very desirable lens that could well become a favourite for many wide angle photographers.

An Editor's Choice award for another fine example of the lens makers' art.

Sigma continue to aggressively fill out their Art, Contemporary and Sports lens ranges, and the new 28mm F1.4 DG HSM is the latest optic to join the well-renowned Art family, slotting in between the existing 24mm and 35mm models.

As with those lenses, the 28mm F1.4 DG HSM is another very fast, tack-sharp prime lens which is capable of producing stunning results, both when stopped down and shooting wide-open at f/1.4. Given that this is a wide-angle lens, it's surprisingly capable of generating some lovely bokeh effects thanks to the fast aperture and 9-blade diaphragm. It exhibits low chromatic aberrations and very little barrel distortion, while usefully being able to focus as close as 28cm. Vignetting at wide-open apertures is the only real optical issue of note, being very apparent when shooting wide-open, but stopping down to f/4 solves the problem altogether.

Build quality is the same as all the other recent Art lenses that we've reviewed, that is to say, excellent, with the brass lens mount and sober all-black design adding to the high-quality feel, and Sigma generously include a very good lens hood and padded case. Auto-focusing proved to be quick on the Canon EOS 5DS R DSLR camera that we predominantly tested the lens with, and manual focus over-ride at any time is a great feature. There's no built-in vibration reduction, but the ability to shoot at f/1.4 partially compensates for this when shooting in very low-light.

Which brings us to the price, the only real fly in the ointment for the new Sigma 28mm F1.4 DG HSM. £1099.99 / $1399.99 is a lot to ask for a 28mm prime lens, especially when Sigma's own 24mm and 35mm lenses can be found for about half the price if you look hard enough. Still, neither of those lenses offer the same focal length (obviously), so if you definitely want an outstanding 28mm prime lens, then the new 28mm F1.4 DG HSM certainly fits the bill.

After writing nearly a dozen Sigma prime Art lens reviews, it becomes increasingly difficult to write a creatively-different summary as these lenses share so many similarities.

All of these lenses are beautifully-designed, solidly built, and a pleasure to use. They are not typically the smallest or lightest in their class and cost-cutting is not a high priority for the Art series. Delivering a good value remains a priority and cutting-edge image quality obviously remains paramount.

The most notable differentiator among the Art series prime lenses is the focal length. When 24mm is too wide and 35mm too long, the Sigma 28mm f/1.4 Art Lens is the right answer. With its superior image quality, the 28mm option will often be the best choice over the other two and over the competitor brands as well. This focal length avails general purpose use and the ultra-wide f/1.4 aperture, unsurpassed by any 28mm DSLR or MILC lens currently produced, extends that use to seemingly any light conditions while providing the strongest 28mm background blur possible.

This lens' biggest downside, as I experienced, is DSLR AF accuracy inconsistency (sensor-based AF systems should completely side-step this problem). A firmware update from Sigma could dramatically reduce this issue making this lens a nearly-perfect 28mm option.

If 28mm works for your application, the Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens deserves a position at the top of your shortlist.

If you can live with the slightly soft center performance at f1.4, the Sigma 28mm f1.4 Art is a very good lens: Extra sharp in the corners of a full-frame sensor with almost no coma, very good resistance against flare, glare and ghosting plus nice background Bokeh and low color aberrations. Together with thorough weather-sealing, solid build quality, and the option to have the mount changed the lens justifies its price and earns a Highly Recommended!
