Sigma C 56 mm f/1.4 DC DN review - LensTip.com

Points forts :

- fût de bonne qualité
- qualité d'image sensationnelle au centre
- résolution décente sur les bords
- faible aberration chromatique longitudinale
- aberration chromatique latérale légère
- pas de problème d'aberration sphérique
- astigmatisme modéré
- bon rapport qualité / prix.

Les inconvénients:

- performance atypique sur les bords
- forte distorsion
- énorme vignetage.

Citation de: Arkadiusz Olech et Maciej Latałło pour LensTip.comTwo Sigma models I've tested lately, the A 40 mm f/1.4 DG HSM and the smaller C 56 mm f/1.4 DC DN, can be positioned on two polar opposites. The first one is a physically huge instrument, constructed without any compromises, with fantastic optics but also a high price tag. The second one is a lightweight, handy optical device, aimed at amateur photographers; its price reflects well their average budget. Small wonder such a lens features many compromises. I could accept the weaker distortion and vignetting performance without a murmur because a fast lens in a small casing has to have a significant brightness loss. Also I am able to understand lack of optics distortion correction in this class of focal lengths; after all camera software can correct that aberration easily and, with such an angle of view, cropped images are hardly an issue.

Still weak image quality on the edge is a drag. There is a big discrepancy between resolution results in the centre and on the edge: while in the frame centre you see resolution records putting to shame the performance of lenses produced by the biggest players of photographic market, on the edge you experience a slump as the lens never reaches 60 lpmm. Perhaps it is not a significant problem for an instrument which is going to be used to take portraits or a shallow depth of field shots; still there are uses where even performance across the frame is more than advisable, even for such a focal range as this one.

All the remarks, presented above, don't change my very positive assessment of the tested Sigma. It is another excellent optical instrument, offered at a sensible price; it shows that pricing of other producers of mirrorless devices is really over the top.

Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C Review | Photography Blog (5 pages)

Citation de: Mark Goldstein, Photography BlogThe Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C is a very appealing mid telephoto prime lens, especially on the Sony E system where it has relatively few rivals.

Offering a classic focal length of 84mm for APS-C compact system cameras and a slightly longer 112mm for Micro Four Thirds cameras, the third lens in Sigma's f/1.4 trilogy exhibits acceptable sharpness wide-open at f/1.4 (at least in the centre) and excellent sharpness from f/2 onwards. Bokeh is very attractive thanks to the 9-blade design and telephoto focal length and chromatic aberrations are very well controlled. The only fly in the image quality ointment is very obvious pin-cushion distortion, which will need to be corrected in post-processing.

The build quality of the Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C is very good, weather-sealing is a bonus, and the size and weight make it a great fit on the smaller APS-C and Micro Four Thirds bodies. It doesn't offer built-in vibration reduction, though, which won't please owners of older camera bodies, but anyone with a camera that does feature image stabilisation won't find it a problem. Sigma have even generously included a very good circular lens hood.

The auto-focusing system proved to be pretty quick and reliable on the Sony A6000 camera that we tested the lens with, and manual focus over-ride at any time is a great feature. The minimum focusing distance of 50cm / 19.7in isn't really anything to write home about, though, limiting the kinds of subjects that you can shoot at close quarters.

The modest asking price of £399.99 / $479.99 for the Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C is very reasonable for such a fast, well-built lens that overall delivers great image quality. Other than the pincushioning and modest focusing distance, there's very little to complain about and lots to like, making the third and final lens in Sigma's APS-C trilogy our firm favourite.

Essai du Sigma 56 mm f/1,4 DC DN | Contemporary (ainsi que des 16 mm et 30 mm) sur Canon EOS M6 Mark II par Mark Goldstein pour Photography Blog :

Sigma 16mm, 30mm and 56mm F1.4 DC DN C for Canon Review | Photography Blog (7 + 3 pages)

Citation de: Mark Goldstein, Photography BlogWith so few native lenses available in the EF-M mount, it's great to see Sigma introduce all three of their popular F1.4 DC DN C primes for Canon's much-neglected APS-C system, so much so that we decided to test all three at once.

While the 56mm is undoubtedly our pick of the bunch, all three would make great additions to the rather threadbare camera bag of a Canon EOS M shooter.

This is especially true for the wide-angle Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C and the short-telephoto Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C, as there are no direct rivals in the Canon range. The only alternatives choices to date have been adapting one of Canon's admittedly huge range of EF and EF-S lenses to the EOS M using the EF-EOS M mount adapter.

It's a tougher sell for the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN C because of the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM, but even then the Sigma is pretty compelling simply because of its price - some £$200 less than the Canon lens.

So, if you're a frustrated Canon EOS M user who has outgrown their kit zoom and doesn't want to adapt a Canon DSLR lens, the introduction of three well-built, high-quality, ultra-fast Sigma lenses in the native EF-M will be music to your ears.

The EF-M 32mm also deserves a very close look, too, but in our view all three Sigma lenses would make an excellent addition to any Canon APS-C shooter's kit bag, greatly expanding its versatility in low light and making it easy to achieve shallow depth-of-field effects.

Now if only Sigma would make a 35mm-equivalent F1.4 prime lens too...

Essai du Sigma 56 mm f/1,4 DC DN | Contemporary sur Sony Alpha 6300 par Klaus Schroiff pour Optical Limits :

Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary (Sony E-mount) - Review / Test Report

Commentaire introductif de Klaus sur le forum : "Nice"

Qualité optique : 4/5
Qualité mécanique : 3,75/5
Rapport performances / prix : 5/5

Citation de: Klaus Schroiff, Optical LimitsThe Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is an excellent example for how mirrorless lenses should be. It's small and well built with a focus on the optical characteristics where it counts the most while compromising on secondary aspects that can be corrected without too many headaches. Namely the sharpness is very good at f/1.4 and downright superb between f/2 and f/8. The lateral CAs are very low. This can't be said about the original distortion which is on the high side for a prime lens. Vignetting is also very pronounced at f/1.4. However, these two aspects are mostly corrected with image auto-correction either in-camera (with JPGs) or in RAW converters. A strength of the lens is the quality of the bokeh with nicely rendered out-of-focus highlights and a smooth blur in the focus transition zones. Bokeh fringing is present at large aperture but that's rather normal for such a lens.

The overall build quality is very good. The lens body is made of metal and the big, rubberized focus ring is both smooth as well as very grippy. It also has basic sealing of some kind. On the downside, manual focusing is way too coarse to be useful at shorter focus distances. AF is about average for a modern mirrorless lens - thus it's quite fast, noiseless and accurate. You won't use it for action photography though.

The sum of its qualities combined with the very reasonable price tag make the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary an obvious choice in its class. Therefore - highly recommended!
