Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF (Fujifilm) - Review / Test Report

Commentaire introductif de Klaus sur le forum :

"Not perfect but a killer price tag ..."

Qualité optique : 2,5/5
Qualité mécanique : 4/5
Rapport performances / prix : 5/5

Citation de: Klaus Schroiff, Optical LimitsThe Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF may not be as good as the competing Fujinon lenses but it easily beats both of them in terms of value. At $329/349EUR, it is almost shockingly priced for such a fast lens. Therefore you may forgive that it has a couple of weak spots. At f/1.4, you have to live with reduced contrast and weak corners but the center quality is pretty good. The question may be whether you really require more than a sharp center here because, usually, you will not place your main subject in the image corners anyway. That being said - it is a limiting factor for astrophotography, for instance. If you want very sharp results across the image field, the Viltrox lens can provide this when stopping down to f/4. Lateral CAs could be a little better at f/1.4 and f/2 but you can, once again, tame them by stopping down a bit (or use CA correct in your favorite RAW converter). Image distortions are very low and that's without any digital trickery. The vignetting characteristic is typical for such a high-speed lens thus there's some visible light falloff at large-aperture settings. The bokeh has its ups and downs depending on the scene. Out-of-focus highlights are nicely rendered. The blur near the image center is very smooth but harsh contrasts in the image corners can be challenging for the lens.

The mechanical quality of the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF is surprisingly high. It's tightly assembled and most of the lens is made of metal including the lens hood. You may expect that a lens from a newcomer company struggles in terms of AF but this is not the case really. The focusing speed is very high and AF operations are noiseless - just as it should be. For your peace of mind, it's also good to know that Viltrox keeps on updating the firmware of the lens (currently at v1.0.6).

So all-in-all, the Viltrox lens may not be perfect but if you can live with its limitations, you can get a lot of bang for your bucks here.

Note: A word of caution for owners of Fujifilm X-Pro 3 cameras - the lens is currently not compatible with this camera because the lens release button on this camera interferes with the diameter of the lens.

Après celui du 23 mm f/1,4 XF, voici maintenant l'essai du Viltrox 33 mm f/1,4 XF sur Fujifilm X-T30 par Klaus Schroiff pour Optical Limits :

Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF (Fujifilm) - Review / Test Report

Commentaire introductif de Klaus sur le forum :

"I've removed the ratings from the 26mp reviews. As so often this produced some stress to some readers and I'm rather tired of explaining our approach to ratings over and over again."

Qualité optique : n/a
Qualité mécanique : 4/5
Rapport performances / prix : 5/5

Citation de: Klaus Schroiff, Optical LimitsWhile we have focused on the individual strengths and weaknesses of the Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF in the previous chapters, the verdict has to be about context. And the context is that this is about a $280 lens costing less than half of the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R and this Fujinon is far from being flawless. The Viltrox lens actually shares many characteristics with this lens. In terms of resolution, it is quite sharp in the image center at f/1.4 and f/2 whereas the outer image field is soft. Stopping down results in a gradual increase in quality reaching its peak at f/5.6. Images are sharp across the board at this setting although there's still some room for improvement here. Lateral CAs are low and nothing to worry about. If you are into architecture photography, you may spot a tad of pincushion distortion. There is also some vignetting when shooting at f/1.4 but it's not out of the ordinary really. The Viltrox lens doesn't feature a built-in correction profile so you have to live with this - unless you own Photoshop/Lightroom where you can take advantage of a downloadable profile from the Viltrox website. A positive aspect is the quality of the bokeh. It deteriorates somewhat in the far corners but generally, it is pleasing. This is especially true for the out-of-focus highlights.

As already mentioned in our previous reviews of Viltrox lenses, the mechanical quality is surprisingly high. Similar to its in-house cousins, the Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF is tightly assembled and most of the lens is made of metal including the lens hood. The AF is both speedy and noiseless - something that can't be said about the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R actually. Firmware upgrades are also possible. This can't be done via the camera but instead, you have to connect a USB cable to the USB port at the mount of the lens - which is perfectly fine, of course.

Overall, it may not the last word in terms of sharpness at large apertures but the Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF is a killer offering in terms of value and a serious alternative to the aging Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R.

Essai du Viltrox AF 23 mm f/1,4 XF sur Fujifilm X-T2 par Arkadiusz Olech et Maciej Latałło pour LensTip.com :

Viltrox AF 23 mm f/1.4 XF review - LensTip.com

Points forts :

- fût élégant et solide
- excellente qualité d'image au centre
- faible aberration chromatique latérale
- pas de problèmes graves d'aberration sphérique
- distorsion modérée
- correction raisonnable de l'astigmatisme
- belle apparence des zones floues
- autofocus silencieux et très rapide
- bon rapport performances / prix.

Points faibles :

- la qualité d'image sur les bords aurait pu être meilleure
- aberration chromatique longitudinale un peu trop prononcée
- coma trop importante
- l'autofocus aurait pu être plus précis.

Citation de: Arkadiusz Olech et Maciej Latałło, LensTip.comIf a new company on the market shows a lens similar, and in some aspects even better, than the brand name product with the same parameters, and it sells for $329, half of the price you have to pay for the Fujinon, our summary can be only positive.

Of course the Vlitrox is not without flaws. By f/1.4 images are sensibly good only in a small part of the middle of the field and on the edge of the field you can forget about very good image quality because the lens never reaches such results. Additionally, it doesn't correct coma and longitudinal chromatic aberration well. Still the Fujinon fared equally weak in these categories and it wasn't able to reach results close to record levels on stopping down, a trick the cheaper Viltrox managed to perform without a problem.

Overall, if you buy the tested Viltrox you'll get a very nice optical instrument that will charm you with good quality photos without draining your pocket. The more such lenses the better.
