Stefan Wiesner fait un bon comparatif ( Youtube) entre ce Samyang et le FE 1.8 . On est dans des prix comparables, le FE 1.4 étant hors concours sur cet aspect.

Clairement c'est la meilleure alternative le f1.8 de chez Sony. Pour ma part je pourrai sans problème perdre 0.4 point de F à voir s'il pique assez à pleine ouverture car le Samyang fait quand-même très fort à ce niveau là !

Effectivement ! La résolution au centre est d'anthologie. Il semble que Samyang ait laissé filer l'aberration sphérique au bénéfice du bokeh mais au détriment d'un focus shift certain (sans conséquence sur un mirrorless si on fait la mise au point à l'ouverture de travail).

Aberration sphérique, vignetage à f/1,4 et flare mis à part, le Samyang enfonce le Sony GM sur tous les critères optiques.

Points forts :

- qualité d'image sensationnelle au centre
- bonne qualité d'image sur les bords du format APS-C,
- aberration chromatique longitudinale modérée
- aberration chromatique latérale négligeable
- distorsion pratiquement nulle
- correction raisonnable de la coma
- très faible astigmatisme
- vignettage léger sur capteur APS-C
- autofocus silencieux et d'une précision raisonnable
- bon rapport performances / prix.

Points faibles :

- des petits problèmes d'aberration sphérique
- piètre performance en contre-jour
- énorme vignetage en 24x36.

I think we don't even have to write a very lengthy summary in this case. If a lens of an independent producer three times cheaper than its well-done brand name rival fares in most categories better than the said brand name lens, you really don't have to be verbose.

We should be grateful to independent producers for their good quality lenses which are sold at normal prices. While developping new systems, brand name manufacturers are climbing new heights of absurdity with pricing new lenses launched on the market...

De fabricant d'opytiques bon marché mais assez quelconques au niveau performance à fabricant d'optiques très bonnes au rapport qualité/prix imbattable.

The new Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE is a very fast and very affordable classic 85mm portrait lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras that's a viable alternative to both the much more expensive Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM optic and the similarly priced, but crucially slower, Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lens. There's also the very good, but physically huge and heavy, Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM which is priced at for £1099.99 / $1199.99.

Sharpness is acceptable when shooting wide-open at f/1.4, very good at f/2 and outstanding from f/2.8 onwards, although the edges aren't quite as sharp as the centre, with f/2.8-f/11 producing the sharpest results.

As with the Samyang AF 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses that we've tested previously, there is some evidence of chromatic aberrations plus vignetting at wide-open apertures, although admittedly that's something that other fast lenses also suffer from.

The build quality is once again excellent, with the metal lens mount and housing adding to the high-quality feel, Samyang have also included a very good lens hood, and weather-sealing is the icing on the cake.

Auto-focusing was acceptably quick on the Sony Alpha A7 III that we tested the lens with, and the AF mechanism is pretty quiet too, making it well-suited for video use.

The asking price of the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE is certainly very competitive given the cost of its main rivals, especially when you consider that the Samyang's image quality is really not that far behind the Sony equivalent. If you don't need the f/1.4 maximum aperture, then the Sony FE 85mm F1.8 is a very close competitor, but that's kind of missing the main point of the faster Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE...

The Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE has been substantially improved compared to the older DSLR variant. The resolution is still not impressive at f/1.4 but fit-for-purpose if you intend to use it for portraits. You just may not want ultra-sharp results in this case. However, if needed the Samyang can give you that when stopping down a bit. The quality is already very high at f/2 and downright great at medium aperture settings. Image distortions are a non-issue even in RAW files. Typical for such lenses, the vignetting is a bit on the high side at f/1.4 but most users will probably rely on auto-correction which reduces the light falloff to an acceptable level. From f/2 there isn't anything to worry about here. Lateral CAs are low. The same can't be said about axial CAs (LoCAs) which can be very pronounced in certain scenes. Axial CAs are very difficult to remove in post-processing. The quality of the bokeh is pretty good overall. The general quality of the out-of-focus blur is pretty silky, especially in the critical background. Out-of-focus highlights are very nicely rendered in the image center but the circular shape is falling apart rather rapidly beyond.

In terms of build quality, it is the best Samyang lens that we tested to date - the metal body feels very sturdy and Samyang implemented some degree of weather sealing. An internal focusing mechanism is also maintaining a constant length throughout the focus range. The AF is not the fastest around though. It has to shift quite some weight due to the heavy glass elements but there's room for improvement here. The rather noisy aperture mechanism isn't ideal either.

The few weaknesses have to be balanced with the price tag of the lens and the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE is hard to beat in this respect - a true value king.
