The new Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art is a viable alternative to the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM ultra-wide-angle zoom lens. It's significantly cheaper, offers a wider 14mm focal length, is smaller in size, and delivers comparable image and build quality. On the flip side, it's a little heavier, only goes up to 24mm, and can only be used with rear-mounted filters due to its bulbous front element and fixed lens hood.

As with the Sony alternative, it delivers outstanding sharpness in the centre of the frame throughout the full aperture and zoom range, and performs excellently at the edges of the frame too.

The Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens does suffer from some noticeable distortion and vignetting, but chromatic aberrations are very well-controlled and it can even create some very nice bokeh effects when shooting wide-open at 24mm thanks to the rounded 11-blade aperture.

The stepping-motor-driven auto-focus system proved to be pleasingly fast, very quiet and reassuringly reliable on the new A7R IV camera body that we tested it with, while manual focusing is also intuitive thanks to the excellent Sony focusing aids, although there are no hard stops at the ends of the focus range. The new, configurable AFL button is a nice addition that's not available on the DSLR version of this lens.

The overall build quality is excellent, plus it's usefully weather-tight too. The only real "missing" feature is image stabilisation, but the fast F2.8 aperture and the fact that this lens will spend most of its time mounted on a tripod mostly make up for that.

Overall, the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art mirrorless camera lens is a smaller, more full-featured update of the DSLR version that's a strong rival to the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM in almost every area.

Testé dans le dernier N° de CI, qui confirme l'excellence de cet objectif. Intéressant aussi, car testé sur Lumix S1r et Sony A7R3.
Les résultats sont encore meilleurs sur A7R3 que sur S1r, malgré la différence de définition. Cela confirme le très bon rendement du 42MP.

Vraiment excellent, rien à redire, et quels progrès par rapport à la version reflex + MC-11 : moins encombrant et moins lourd (-480gr), AF plus efficace, souple et silencieux, et la touche AFL en bonus. Juste faire attention à la lentille frontale bombée et ne pouvant recevoir de filtre de protection, et pare-soleil court bien sur.

Petit bémol par rapport à la version pour reflex : le vignettage est plus important, prix à payer sans doute pour les gains en encombrement et poids.

Points forts :

- distorsion sensible en 24x36 qui, de plus, s'accompagne de déformation en moustache aux focales les plus courtes

In the summary of our test we praised a lot the Sigma A 14-24 mm f/2.8 DG HSM. The Sigma A 14-24 mm f/2.8 DG DN reached very similar results in practically all testing categories so it would be difficult to criticize it here. We feel it deserves our praise especially that it is an instrument noticeably smaller and physically lighter than its reflex camera equivalent and yet it managed to ensure you even a tad better resolution on the edge of full frame.

It would be difficult to demand anything more from a lens with such a wide angle of view and a good, fixed-focal f/2.8 aperture fastness. You get high image quality in the frame centre right from the maximum relative aperture and no weak points even in the very demanding edges of full frame. If you add to that an excellent performance against bright light, a sensational correction of chromatic aberration and a fast, silent, and accurate autofocus, the overall image is really outstanding. Two biggest slip-ups, distortion and vignetting, are at the same time easily corrected by software (but, of course, you have to pay for every of such corrections) so you can forgive them more willingly.

Finally the matter of price. The Sigma A 14-24 mm f/2.8 DG DN can hardly be called cheap – you have to pay around $1400 for it. Two facts might make that spending more bearable. Firstly, when you compare this amount of money to prices of other mirrorless full frame devices you can find out the company didn't go over the top. Secondly, Sigma have resisted the temptation of raising the prices when moving from reflex camera constructions to mirrorless models because the price tag of the new Sigma is basically the same as the price of its reflex camera equivalent.

Je possède depuis trois mois cet objectif, qui a de grandes qualités (pas trop lourd pour ce type de zoom, AF réactif, excellent piqué, très très bonne qualité de construction)... en revanche, il souffre quand même d'une distorsion assez prononcée à 14 mm, dans certains cas c'est assez gênant. Heureusement c'est nettement mieux au-delà de 16 mm. Bref, en paysage ça passe, mais en archi c'est nettement plus coton.

Autant pour le vignetage c'est évident, autant pour la distorsion il n'y a pas unanimité. Certains tests comme celui cité en dernier affirment une distorsion importante, d'autres une distorsion très faible (sauf à courte distance). Si je regarde sous DXO (qui est spécialiste dans le domaine), des clichés à 14mm avec et sans correction la différence est minime (comparé à un 24-105mm à 24mm par exemple) et j'aurais du mal à dire quelle est la version corrigée, hors repères évidents. Pour moi la distorsion est faible, mais peut-être y a-t-il un aspect qui m'échappe.
Donc ça me laisse un peu perplexe, précisant que je ne suis pas spécialiste dans ce domaine ...

chez Dxo pour ce genre de renseignements

Lorsque j'ai évoqué DXO, c'est le logiciel de développement et ses corrections optiques.
DXO n'a pas publié de test de cet objectif sur DXOMARK.
J'ai regardé sous OpticalLimits, le test de la Version EF montre une distorsion faible. La version FE n'a pas été testée.
Il faudrait faire le test du mur de briques mais on risque de se retrouver trop proche selon les dimensions.

- coma très faible

Points faibles :

- assez grand et lourd dans l'absolu
- ne peut pas prendre de filtre avant vissable
- l'AF-S est un peu lent
- de la distorsion en barillet aux plus courtes focales
- vignetage relativement élevé.

The Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN is not a cheap lens at $1,399 US, but it manages to justify that cost and then some, producing some of the highest image quality I've ever seen at these focal lengths. Truly exceptional image sharpness, even at 14mm, with outstanding color and contrast, great flare control, virtually non-existent chromatic aberration and an outstanding build quality make this lens not only outstanding for an ultra-wide zoom lens, but outstanding for an ultra-wide prime lens. I have heard some reports of people getting sub-par copies of the lens that don't perform as well, which happens with every lens, but on a lens that can be so good, it stands out when a sub par example is found...don't settle for less than exceptional with this lens, though: that's the way it should be with this optic.

As no lens is truly perfect, you can point to some barrel distortion at the wide end, and somewhat high vignetting as marks against it optically, but that's about it. The biggest detriment to the lens is one that is the case for all 14mm and wider lenses: the lack of a front filter thread. If you don't use front filters often, it's not a big deal, and if you only use ND filters, the rear filter slot has you covered; but for polarizer use, you're limited to large and expensive filter holder systems. Whether that's worth it to you will be the big choice here.

Because of the front filter situation and the high total cost including those filters, the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 may not be for everyone, but if you want the best optical quality you can get in a wide-zoom, this is it. It's by far the best ultra-wide zoom lens I've ever used, and I have personally swapped out my Tamron 17-28mm and a few of my wide-angle primes in place of the Sigma, which handily improves on all of those lenses in a single unit.
