Le Sigma 20 mm f/1,4 DG DN Art (999 €) est une très bonne optique globalement et montre une nette amélioration sur les aspects taille, poids et autofocus par rapport à l'ancien Sigma 20 mm f/1,4 DG HSM Art (1.000 €).

Cet objectif sera idéal pour du paysage, de l'architecture, de la photo de nuit,et de l'astrophotographie et cela tant en photo qu'en vidéo.

Le piqué est excellent au centre dès f/1,4, le rendu des couleur très naturel, les ronds de bokeh excellents et l'autofocus très rapide et précis. Le flou d'arrière-plan est assez doux à f/1,4 en général mais peut devenir un peu plus nerveux avec les arrières-plans plus complexes.

Ses défauts principaux sont le piqué dans les coins qui est bon à pleine ouverture mais n'atteint que le grade très bon. Le poids et la taille bien que réduits par rapport à la précédente version restent importants.

Alternatives :

• Voigtländer 21 mm f/1,4 Nokton Aspherical (1.400 €), une optique manuelle très compacte et tout en métal. Elle offre les même performances au centre que le Sigma 20 mm f/1,4 DG DN et mieux dans les coins avec un piqué excellent sur tout le champ dès f/4 comme pour le Sony 20 mm f/1,8 G. Néanmoins le flou d'arrière-plan est un peu plus nerveux que les autres.
     
• Sony 20 mm f/1,8 G (1.100 €) le meilleur en terme d'équilibre global ; parmi les meilleurs sur tous les aspects : piqué, poids, compacité, bokeh et performance en astrophotographie.
     
• Sigma 20 mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary (700 €), le meilleur rapport qualité/prix. Un peu moins bon en terme de piqué dans les coins par rapport au Sony (mais meilleur que le Sigma 20 mm f/1,4 DG DN) et aussi moins bon en terme de niveau d'aberrations chromatiques et de résistance au flare.

There are some terrific ultra-wide primes around, and the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens is definitely up there with the best. It's true that 20mm is quite wide and does need some thought to get the best out of the composition, but it is a matter of practice and confidence, of moving in close, and closer. Once the feel of this clicks into place, then what a powerful lens it becomes. Sweeping vistas, close-ups with the unusual perspective of that close viewpoint, and everything in focus from near to far....are just some of the possibilities. Confident street photography will immerse us in the action, quite different from standing back with a long lens and becoming a distant observer. Environmental portraits can include the details of a working environment, perhaps an artist in a studio with their work surrounding them. Architecture is another obvious choice, especially wide interiors and dramatic staircases.

With such potential, delivered with impeccable quality, the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens is a definite 'Editor's Choice'.

It's very difficult to assess such lenses as the Sigma A 20 mm f/1.4 DG DN because they have no direct rivals. When it comes to this focal length Nikon and Sony offer you only slower devices. The only reference point is the predecessor of the tested Sigma designed for reflex cameras so the Sigma A 20 mm f/1.4 DG HSM but still any kind of comparison is not easy. When it comes to the mirrorless version Sigma raised the bar significantly, deciding to offer a lens smaller, lighter, with a possibility of using classic 82 mm filters. As if it wasn't enough, you additionally got a possibility to use rear filters and many new functionalities on the barrel of the lens, e.g. the new MFL (Manual Focus Lock) switch, preventing an accidental focus change, and a part that allows you to attach heaters that might prevent condensation of dew on elements during nighttime shooting.

I didn't have any doubts that reduction of physical dimensions might adversely affect vignetting and indeed, we observed such a correlation. Vignetting is also the most serious Sigma's flaw but it hurts a bit less because it was completely expected. If the lens's bigger predecessor had a high level of vignetting, it would be foolish to count on a better performance in case of a smaller lens.

When it comes to resolution, the new Sigma performs more evenly than its predecessor and rivals. There are no resolution records in the centre but the results are evenly spread across the frame; as a result the Sigma is able to offer a sensible image quality in the whole of the frame, even at the maximum relative aperture. With such a wide field of view and such a great aperture fastness it is a huge achievement.

There were also minor flaws, so moderate that we didn't bother to add them to our official 'cons' list. I suppose if distortion was corrected a tad better and spherical aberration was lower I would be completely happy with the lens.

Despite all these problems I don't doubt that the Sigma A 20 mm f/1.4 DG DN is a very well-put-together lens, a real step forward when compared to its reflex camera predecessor. There are categories where it fares a bit weaker than that instrument but there are also categories where it prevails, being a smaller, lighter, and far more functional lens overall.
