Le Tokina atx-m 11-18 mm f/2,8 est un très bon zoom grand angle pour les boîtiers Sony APSC. Il sera idéal pour du paysage, de l'architecture et pourra aussi être utilisé en astrophotographie.

Sa qualité de construction est bonne, il est léger et compact. L'autofocus est bon. Les performances optiques au centre sont excellentes à 11 mm mais seulement bonnes à 18 mm. A f/5,6 les performances seront très bonnes sur tout le champ à toutes les focales. La coma est légèrement visible à f/2,8 mais disparaît à f/4. Le rendu des couleurs est très bon. La distorsion et le vignetage sont visibles à 11 mm mais rien de très sérieux. La résistance au flare est moyenne.

Alternatives :

• Le Tamron 11-20 mm f/2,8 Di III-A RXD (900 €) est le meilleur en photographie mais aussi le plus cher ; sa résistance au flare est moins bonne.
• Le Sony E PZ 10-2 0mm f/4 G (850 €) est le meilleur en vidéo et en vlog et le meilleur en résistance au flare.

Le Tokina (800 €) est un très bon objectif mais pas aussi bon que ses deux concurrents. Si son prix baisse à -25% par rapport au prix du Tamron alors ce sera une offre compétitive au vu de des performances.

Points forts :

- excellente qualité d'image au centre
- qualité d'image raisonnable sur les bords
- quasiment pas d'aberration chromatique longitudinale
- correction appréciable de la distorsion
- léger astigmatisme
- autofocus silencieux, rapide et précis.

Point faible :

- performances épouvantables en contre-jour.

Un deuxième point faible, non repris dans la liste ci-dessus, est relevé dans le corps du texte puis dans la conclusion ci-dessous : un niveau moyen à élevé d'aberration chromatique latérale.

I like many aspects of the Tokina ATX-M 11–18 mm f/2.8 E. First of all it is very sharp in the frame centre. At the shorter end of the focal spectrum it allows you to get images of very good quality across the frame.

Additionally, it corrects distortion and vignetting with the help of optics – a rare thing nowadays. I am very happy Tokina constructors didn't pin that task on a camera software even though it made their work much more difficult. They managed to construct a lens that is sharp and completely able to correct most of optical aberrations in a right way and they should be praised for it.

Still, not all aberrations are corrected that well. The lens fell short of it when it comes to lateral chromatic aberration – perhaps the situation is not as bad as it used to be but still it can't be called good either. Performance against bright light is a very painful slip-up – years have passed and Tokina still can't show us wide angle instruments which would be efficient in that area.

It's nice to see that Tokina is finally back with a new original design. And the Tokina atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E doesn't disappoint. Like all ultra-wide lenses, it has a few rough edges but overall, we are generally very pleased with the performance. This is especially true for the resolution chapter. With the exception of 18mm  [at]  f/2.8, it is pretty sharp across the image field. At medium aperture settings, it even approaches greatness. Thanks to comparatively low native image distortions, image auto-correction doesn't need to work hard either - thus maintaining most of the resolution goodness. The original vignetting is very high at 11mm f/2.8 but it's reasonably well controlled at other settings and quite low with auto-correction again. Lateral CAs are an old Tokina enemy and they are indeed visible in RAW files but they represent no problem after processing. The sunstar rendering is decent at medium aperture settings. A weakness is flare in backlit situations, so better use the supplied lens hood.

The Tokina lens follows the brand's long tradition of having a very good build quality. The lens is lightweight yet doesn't sacrifice a solid feel. The control rings are very smooth. The inner lens tube extends slightly when zooming towards the wide-end - there is nothing wrong with this, but it is a little unusual in this respect. The AF is reasonably fast and it's perfectly silent. While it won't affect most users, we'd prefer finer steps of the AF motor though. As is, manual focusing via the focus-by-wire system feels somewhat coarse.

The Tokina atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E enters a busy market segment with lots of options to choose from. Besides being a pretty good lens to boot, it is also more affordable than most making it the value king in its class.
