les Thypoch Simera 28 mm f/1,4 et 35 mm f/1,4 ont été annoncés le 14 mai en montures de mirrorless.

Comme pour leur homologues en monture Leica M, la principale originalité de ces Thypoch SImera est le dispositif utilisé pour visualiser la profondeur de champ : une série incurvée de points de couleur orange apparaissent ou disparaissent lorsqu'on ferme ou ouvre la bague de diaphragme.

Un système analogue, dénommé Visifocus, existait déjà sur les objectifs Kern-Paillard pour caméras Bolex des années 1950 et 1960 et notamment les Kern Macro-Switar.

Pour l'anecdote, ce nom bizarre de Thypoch est la contraction de Thy (l'adjectif possessif "ton" en anglais ancien ou liturgique) et Epoch (époque) et Simera signifie aujourd'hui en grec (σήμερα).

The Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 Z is certainly not a mainstream lens. Its lack of electronic coupling — no AF, EXIF, or camera-controlled aperture — simply limits the target market.

While the lens has its weaknesses, it also has merits. Interestingly, the Simera 28mm f/1.4 Z sticks to what some consider a quite typical 3D pop recipe - comparatively few elements, just one ED element, and a high element/group ratio. I will leave it to our readers to determine this based on our sample gallery. In purely technical terms, the lens is usable at f/1.4 if your main subject is near the image center. However, the corners are soft at this setting and the overall contrast is somewhat subdued. Stopping down the f/2 helps to boost the image contrast quite a bit. For good results, you should stop down to f/2.8, and it touches excellence around the f/5.6 mark. The vignetting is high at f/1.4 but quite well controlled from f/2.8. Image distortions and CAs are quite negligible. The quality of the bokeh is very good for a lens in this class, and sun stars are nicely rendered. On the downside, flare can be very obvious in contra-light scenes, and LoCA/bokeh fringing can be an issue at closer focus distances, at least. Also check your focus in magnified view due to RSAs.

If you appreciate great build quality, you will like the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 Z. The lens body is fully made of metal, and the quality of the imprints shows a nice attention to detail. The focus ring is buttery smooth, and the click-action of the aperture rings feels premium. The Leica-style square-shaped lens hood feels special as well. At least out of the box, it feels pretty much comparable to a Voigtländer lens, for instance.

Overall the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 is a decent performer and if you are into video or enjoy vintage-style photography, it could be worthwhile.

Compared to the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4, the Simera 35mm f/1.4 is more "classic" in terms of optical performance. At large aperture settings, the results are quite soft and low contrast. If you are after a vintage look, this may not be a bad thing. However, unlike true vintage lenses from the 60s and 70s, the lens is capable of rendering very sharp and contrasty results at medium aperture settings. The vignetting is high at f/1.4 but acceptable when stopped down to f/2.8. Image distortions are a non-issue. Lateral and axial CAs are on the high side at large apertures. The quality of the bokeh is pretty good if you stop down a tiny bit, at least. There is some focus shift going on when stopping down, so you should focus with a stopped-down aperture unless you operate it at f/8 or beyond. And you better keep the lens hood attached all the time because the lens is prone to flare.

The true highlight of the lens is the build quality. Thypoch went the extra mile to create a special lens with one of the highest quality perceptions that we experienced from a manual lens. It's an all-metal lens body with very smooth control rings. The attention to detail is especially obvious with respect to the depth-of-field indicator, which gives you a visual indicator by changing the colors - mechanically, of course, because this is a fully manual lens without electronic coupling. The square, metal lens hood adds to the classic feel as well.
Some users complain about the clinical performance that modern lenses give you. If you are in this camp or interested in video with a vintage touch, this fairly exotic lens may be something for you. When compared to the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4, we'd still prefer the latter, though.

Le Thypoch Simera 35 mm f/1,4 (700 €) est une optique manuelle très bien construite avec une excellente prise en main. Les performances sont assez bonnes pour une optique de ce genre comparées par exemple à celles d'un Voigtländer 35 mm f/1,4 Nokton Classic (750 €).

L'optique vise un rendu vintage avec du caractère donc il est inutile de vouloir la comparer à un traditionnel 35 mm f/1,4 autofocus qui offrira de meilleures performances pour le prix.

L'objectif fournit un bon rendu des couleurs, assez chaud, un piqué bon à très bon au centre et une relativement bonne résistance au flare.

Alternative : le Laowa 35 mm f/0,95 Argus (1.069 €) offre les meilleures performances possibles avec un piqué très bon à excellent et un superbe rendu en terme de flou d'arrière-plan mais tout cela dans un format beaucoup plus imposant et à un prix significativement plus élevé.

Il est difficile de parler d'habitude, ou pas, pour une marque lancée il y a moins d'un an et demi (septembre 2023).

Je pense que ça ne se vend pas et qu'ils arrêtent les frais, pour cette monture et peut-être bientôt pour d'autres.

Pour autant Thypoch va annoncer le Simera 75 mm f/1,4 au CP+.

La maison-mère Shenzhen Dongzheng Optical Technology Co., Ltd (DZO / Dongzheng Optics / DZOptics) est pour sa part coutumière du fait puisque le Kerlee 35 mm f/1,2 (objectif pour reflex) avait été annoncé en juin 2016 et avait brutalement disparu en mai 2020, en même temps que quatre objectifs en monture µ4/3 évoqués dès avril 2019 mais finalement jamais commercialisés.

Shenzhen Dongzheng Optical Technology Co., Ltd avait alors réservé la marque DZOptics / DZO à des objectifs à usage industriel, son métier d'origine, avant de revenir un peu plus tard dans les objectifs pour le cinéma puis, sous la marque Thypoch, dans les objectifs photographiques avec une gamme cinéma dérivée.
