If the Zeiss Milvus 135mm f/2 lens featured autofocus, it would be a must-have lens for all serious kits. As it does not, the applications for this lens are more limited. Still, if a manual focus lens works for your 135mm application, this lens is a very highly recommended solution.

The image quality coming from this lens is so high that, it seems to me that Zeiss could have used yellow paint, emblazoned it with the Otus brand name and charged double the price. Still, the price is not low, the lens is not light and AF is not featured, but otherwise, this is another drool-worthy Zeiss lens. It is hard not to love this lens.

Like its predecessor, the updated Zeiss Milvus 2/100M ZE is a highly-corrected model, but with no changes to the optical design, image quality is only slightly improved over the original. That's to be expected. The change in the T* coating has reduced flare, which in turn improves contrast and perceived sharpness, but even then, it is only a slight improvement. Taken as whole, the Zeiss Milvus 2/100M ZE remains the fastest lens of its type whose image quality can't bettered by rivals. While it is pricey, only you can decide if it the Zeiss has twice the utility of the Canon or Sigma models.

With an irreproachable reputation for quality, Carl Zeiss lenses have long been the desire of many a photographer. Historically they've often been out of financial reach for many of us, unfortunately, but the new Milvus range looks to address that with some competitively-priced models to challenge the high performance optics from both own-brand and third-party manufacturers. Featuring an all-metal construction, manual focus, and Zeiss precision engineering, the Milvus 35mm f/2 is the type of lens that should last a photographer a lifetime. The performance of the ZE (EF-mount) Canon version is very good, with nice low-light results and high levels of sharpness, particularly in the center of the frame. The Milvus 35mm f/2 realizes more of the sensor potential of the lower-resolution chips in the EOS 5D Mark IV and the 1D X Mark II compared to the EOS 5DS R. It does achieve its highest overall sharpness score of 25 P-Mpix on EOS 5DS R, but this represents only half of the camera's 50.6Mp sensor resolution.

Compared to Canon's original EF 35mm f/1.4L and the alternative Zeiss Distagon T 35mm f/2 ZE, the Milvus delivers very comparable results across the board. However, the Milvus doesn't quite match the heights for low-light performance and sharpness compared to the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II or Sigma's 35mm f/1.4 A, which boast autofocus, too.

This said, if you want some first-class German engineering to attach on the front of your Canon DSLR, the Carl Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/2 is a beautiful lens and delivers good results.

The Zeiss Milvus 35mm f/1.4 lens is a bright, high-quality optic with smooth bokeh and a very well balanced set of properties. It handles beautifully and is a pleasure to use. It exudes a feeling of quality. It is very likely that it will last for many years before needing any attention. The manual focus is utterly smooth and the point of focus is very easy to achieve.

There is a high price to pay for this, so some hard decisions need to be made. Paying £1699 for a 35mm lens, even an f/1.4 model, is a very high cost and needs to be assessed alongside the amount of use that it might be put to. But for those who want that indefinable something from a lens and are able to meet the cost, then there may be a much clearer choice, especially if 35mm is a focal length that is favoured.

- la mise au point manuelle n'est pas du goût de tout le monde
- lourd et volumineux.

As always, there will be a price to pay for excellence. None of the 24/25mm f/1.4 bright lenses are cheap, but they do represent the cost of high quality optics. The Milvus represents a variation, sacrificing the AF and pulling no punches in weight or bulk, just delivering solid engineering and optical quality.

Manual focus does become more difficult the wider we go and this may well not be for everybody, but there are others who will revel in the sheer tactile joy of handling a precision, traditional style lens.
