Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Review | Photography Blog (8 + 3 pages)

Citation de: Mark Goldstein, Photography Blog
The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is an amazingly lightweight and very compact standard zoom lens for Sony Alpha and L-mount full-frame cameras.

Obviously intended as a clear riposte to the considerable success that Tamron have had with the 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD, the new Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 gives up a little extra reach to crucially be even lighter and shorter than its main rival.

Compared to its big brother, the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN, this Sigma 28-70mm is significantly shorter and almost half the weight, but it has to give up a in order to achieve that.

It isn't as wide, has a much simpler design with fewer external controls, isn't as well-constructed or well-sealed, is slower to auto-focus, isn't as sharp, doesn't produce quite as nice bokeh, and doesn't ship with either a lockable lens hood or a lens bag.

In short, if we had to choose between the two Sigma lenses, the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN is the clear winner and well worth the extra £300 / $200, unless size is absolutely your number one priority.

The contest between the new Sigma 28-70mm and the popular Tamron 28-75mm is a much closer one. The Tamron has slightly more reach, but it isn't quite as well-built as the Sigma or as sharp at the edges of the frame. We'd give the Sigma the slight edge overall, but then again the Tamron is £60/$100 cheaper, though, which may well prove more decisive for a lot of buyers.

In terms of its optical performance, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is tack-sharp in the centre throughout all of the zoom range, with sharpness only falling off a little at the very edges of the frame. It also produces some nice bokeh effects thanks to the 9-blade iris diaphragm.

There's some obvious vignetting at wide-open apertures, barrel distortion at 24mm and slight pincushioning at 70mm, but all of this can be corrected either in-camera or during post-processing. Importantly chromatic aberrations, which are much harder to correct, are very well-controlled.

Auto-focusing proved to be quick on the Sony Alpha A7 III that we tested the lens with, and manual focus over-ride at any time is a great feature.

Build quality is excellent, with the brass lens mount and sober all-black design adding to the premium feel, and Sigma have also included a good lens hood. The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens is usefully weather-sealed, but only at the mount and not also throughout the barrel as on the Sigma 24-70mm.

This lens doesn't have a built-in optical image stabilisation system, instead relying on Sony's in-camera system, which will be fine for everyone except those who own a first generation Alpha camera (which don't feature built-in OIS).

Overall, the new Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a well-built, fast standard zoom lens that delivers excellent image quality in a very small, lightweight package.

It isn't as good as our favourite Sony full-frame standard zoom, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN, in any aspect except size, but it does out-perform its main rival, the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD, albeit at a slightly higher price-point, which makes choosing between them a close-run thing.

We have identified that the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary for Sony E-mount could occasionally cause blurring when using the in-body image stabilization function while the lens is attached on the gimbal.

At the moment, we are in process of the development of the new firmware that can correct this phenomenon, and aiming for the announcement on October 21st.

Highly Recommended - A great general purpose lens for travelling light and a good match for the 16-28mm as a set.

Great value for money, incredibly even performance across the whole focal length range, lovely bokeh and fantastic handling just about sum up this attractive and useful lens. Along with its 16-28mm sibling, they make a great pair to travel light with. It's not perfection though, and distortion and CA may need some correction in the camera or in software for some subjects. The lack of weather sealing is also a shame, although we can recognise that to include it would increase the price and quite possibly the bulk of the lens. It could be done though.

Going with the very smooth bokeh, the lens also exhibits that other sort of quality that we seek, that is the undefinable something that makes one lens a keeper and another not. This one looks like a keeper and it could be a trusted go-to lens that stays on the camera for much of the time.

In conclusion, 'Highly Recommended'.

Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary - Review / Test Report

Commentaire introductif de Klaus sur le forum : "Good with a few caveats."

Overall, the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens is a fine package with a few caveats. It shares a few weak spots with its bigger brother, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN ART - namely, some corner issues at f/2.8. The broader center quality is generally great, and if you stop down a little, the outer image field is also pretty sharp in the wide- to mid-range. The situation is more difficult at 70mm, where you have to stop down to at least f/8 for decent results across the image field. For most users, the 70mm setting will be primarily about shallow depth-of-field photography, and for this, the weakness isn't a showstopper. However, for landscape or architecture photography, this is less ideal. Uncorrected RAW images show heavy vignetting at f/2.8 and quite pronounced distortions at the extreme ends of the range. Auto-correction will take care of this as well as the already low lateral CAs. The quality of the bokeh is generally good, especially for a zoom lens. The lens isn't a sun star lover, which seems to be typical for most Sigmas. This is also a design choice between better out-of-focus discs or better sun stars.

We have been a fan of Sigma build quality ever since they started with their ART/SPORT/Contemporary lineups. Sigma's TSC plastics feel both solid as well as nicely textured, the overall build tolerances are very tight, and the control rings operate smoothly. And all this applies to the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary as well. Maybe its biggest value proposition is the very compact size and low weight. In this respect, it undercuts all other lenses in this class by quite a margin. While the lens has some basic weather sealing at the mount, it's not as well sealed against the elements as professional-grade lenses.

As you may conclude, it depends on a couple of factors whether the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary is the right lens for you. If you are looking for a fast, reasonably priced and very compact standard zoom for street photography or family events, the Sigma will tick a lot of boxes. It doesn't deliver the ultimate in image quality, but if that's your goal, you'll have to invest quite a bit more.
