Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary (Sony E-mount) - Review / Test Report

Commentaires introductif de Klaus sur le forum : "Quite nice especially for the price"

Qualité optique : 3/5
Qualité mécanique : 3,75/5
Rapport performances / prix : 4,75/5

Citation de: Klaus Schroiff, Optical LimitsWhile there are numerous fast, full format E-mount lenses available, they are very expensive and simply oversized when mounted on APS-C cameras. Sony showed little interest in providing dedicated APS-C prime lenses lately so it's most welcome that Sigma has taken the leap of faith by providing some new and interesting designs for the smaller format. The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is about as fast as it can reasonably get without running into a cost trap especially considering the rather wide-angle of view - equivalent to a "24mm" full format lens. Performance-wise it is pretty good but it has a couple of weak spots, too. At maximum aperture, the center resolution is very decent but the corner quality falls apart. Whether sharp corners at f/1.4 are really important is a question of application. For astrophotography, it's clearly not ideal whereas for shallow depth-of-field scenes, it's hardly relevant. Stopping down to f/2 helps a lot in the image corners and the results are sharp across the image field from f/2.8 onward until diffraction effects set in. The native vignetting characteristic could be better and image distortions are on the high-side. However, this isn't too much to worry about with activated auto-correction. Lateral CAs are generally very low. The quality of the bokeh is a bit of mixed bag with very nice out-of-focus highlights but also with a fairly smeary general bokeh rendition.

The overall build quality is very good. The lens body is made of metal and the huge, rubberized focus ring is both smooth as well as very grippy. It also has basic sealing of some kind. On the downside, manual focusing is way too coarse to be useful at shorter focus distances. The AF is quite speedy and noiseless though.

The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN is may not be flawless but given the very reasonable pricing, it's a great value offering.

Essai du Sigma 16 mm f/1,4 DC DN | Contemporary (ainsi que des 30 mm et 56 mm) sur Canon EOS M6 Mark II par Mark Goldstein pour Photography Blog :

Sigma 16mm, 30mm and 56mm F1.4 DC DN C for Canon Review | Photography Blog (7 + 3 pages)

Citation de: Mark Goldstein, Photography BlogWith so few native lenses available in the EF-M mount, it's great to see Sigma introduce all three of their popular F1.4 DC DN C primes for Canon's much-neglected APS-C system, so much so that we decided to test all three at once.

While the 56mm is undoubtedly our pick of the bunch, all three would make great additions to the rather threadbare camera bag of a Canon EOS M shooter.

This is especially true for the wide-angle Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C and the short-telephoto Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C, as there are no direct rivals in the Canon range. The only alternatives choices to date have been adapting one of Canon's admittedly huge range of EF and EF-S lenses to the EOS M using the EF-EOS M mount adapter.

It's a tougher sell for the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN C because of the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM, but even then the Sigma is pretty compelling simply because of its price - some £$200 less than the Canon lens.

So, if you're a frustrated Canon EOS M user who has outgrown their kit zoom and doesn't want to adapt a Canon DSLR lens, the introduction of three well-built, high-quality, ultra-fast Sigma lenses in the native EF-M will be music to your ears.

The EF-M 32mm also deserves a very close look, too, but in our view all three Sigma lenses would make an excellent addition to any Canon APS-C shooter's kit bag, greatly expanding its versatility in low light and making it easy to achieve shallow depth-of-field effects.

Now if only Sigma would make a 35mm-equivalent F1.4 prime lens too...
