Not so long ago, in the summary of its test, I was gushing over the performance of the Sony E 20 mm f/1.8G. I never expected that I would have to write a similar puff piece for another ultra-wide angle Sony lens.

A puff piece? I use this term deliberately. What can be done – the Sony E 11 mm f/1.8 certainly deserves that and more. You deal here with a fast ultra-wide angle lens which is small, shapely, and lightweight, sensationally sharp in the frame centre and satisfactorily sharp on frame edges even at the maximum relative aperture.

If it wasn't enough, its suggested price during the launch is 600 Euro – not high, taking all the possibilities of the tested instrument into account. I don't doubt that the Sony E 11 mm f/1.8 will find many happy users very soon.

Le Sony 11 mm f/1,8 (600 euros) est une excellente optique grand angle compacte et légère pour les boîtiers Sony APSC. Elle sera idéale pour du paysage, de l'architecture, de la photo de rue et de l'astrophotographie.

L'objectif fournit un excellent piqué au centre et très bon dans les coins, un excellent autofocus, de très beaux ronds de bokeh à pleine ouverture, un flou d'arrière-plan doux, un très bon rendu des couleurs, une très bonne résistance au flare et un niveau d'aberrations chromatiques très faible.

Ses gros points noirs sont la distorsion et le vignetage mais qui devraient être corrigés automatiquement par Lightroom prochainement.

L'objectif sera aussi idéal en vidéo avec son faible focus breathing, son excellent autofocus et sa compacité/légèreté qui le rendent idéal sur une gimbal et pour du vlog.

Alternatives :

• Le nouveau Sony 11 mm f/1,8 fournit les meilleurs résultats globalement en termes de consistance sur tout le champ + douceur du flou d'arrière-plan.
• Le Zeiss Touit 12 mm f/2,8 fait un peu mieux en terme de consistance sur tout le champ mais avec une ouverture moins bonne et donc moins de flou d'arrière-plan.
• Le Tamron 11-20 mm f/2,8 Di III-A RXD offre le même niveau de piqué et il est plus polyvalent mais beaucoup plus lourd, gros et avec un stop en moins.
• Le Samyang 12 mm f/2 est très bon globalement mais souffre de coins moins bons.

A recommander sans hésitation.

Il est là le plus gros probleme de tous ces nouveaux objectifs compacts et légers.
Ils sont sympa à utiliser, bien construits, bien piqués, mais souffrent d'une belle distorsion, qui peut etre tres genante.

The E 11mm F1.8 is a very welcome ultra-wide-angle addition to the rather neglected Sony APS-C sensor mirrorless camera system. This tiny lens is one of the more affordable Sony primes available, yet it still offers a lot of features and performance for the reasonable asking price.

The main attraction is the combination of a fast F1.8 maximum aperture with the 16.5mm equivalent field of view, making it one of the fastest ultra-wide-angle lenses available for Sony APSC sensor cameras.

It's more versatile than a slower or narrower optic, ideal for both handheld vlogging to camera where you want to throw out the background and for more traditional landscape and architecture stills photography where you want to stop down the aperture.

The build quality is acceptably good, including full weather-sealing, although you'll ideally want to pair it with an equally weather-sealed lens for full peace of mind (unlike the ZV-E10 that we tested it with).

You'll also ideally want to pair it with a stabilized camera body like the Alpha A6600 as it doesn't have any OIS, which again meant that the non-stabilized ZV-E10 was a less than ideal partner.

The E 11mm F1.8 and ZVE10 did prove to be a great match when it came to auto-focusing, though, which proved to be be fast, reliable and virtually silent thanks to the dual motor system.

Optically, the centre sharpness was very high throughout all of the aperture range, even wide-open at F1.8. Edge sharpness doesn't quite match the centre, though, requiring you to stop down to F2.8 to get the best results.

Chromatic aberrations are almost completely absent, vignetting isn't too obvious, and flare is present but well controlled even when shooting directly into the sun.

The only real notable optical issue is some very obvious barrel distortion in the RAW files, which is automatically corrected in-camera for the JPEG files, meaning that you'll need to do some post-processing or apply a lens correction profile if you shoot using the former file type.

This lens' main rival is the Samyang AF 12mm F2, a similarly sized lens which offers a slightly slower maximum aperture but is £100 / £50 cheaper than the new Sony 11mm, making it well worth considering if you're in the market for a 16mm prime.

Overall, the new E 11mm F1.8 is an excellent, affordable ultra-wide-angle addition to the Sony APS-C sensor mirrorless camera system that offers a lot of bang for your buck...

Highly Recommended – A superb ultra-wide and an ideal choice for stills and videographers alike.

This is a gorgeous little lens, light, compact, easy to handle and giving sharp, lively results for both stills and videography alike. It could be very impressive as a vlogging lens. The close focusing is also a real advantage, allowing new, dramatic viewpoints. Happily, sharpness holds up well even at very close distances, so model photography could also take on a new dimension.

With such tight control of distortion, the lens is particularly suited to architectural photography, where straight lines will be reproduced correctly as straight lines. As a vlogging lens, the close focus and wide field of view allow all the necessary leeway. It is of course possible to use such a lens even for portraits, but some care is needed if the results are intended to flatter the subject.

Without a doubt, a very versatile and high-quality lens that can be 'Highly Recommended'.

If you believe the hype around the Sony E 11mm f/1.8 over on YouTube, it has to be the best lens ever since sliced bread. Well, YouTube videos tend to be a little -say- overenthusiastic at times. The Sony lens is undoubtedly very good, but there are reasons why Sony didn't classify this lens with a "G" in the name. In terms of sharpness, the E 11mm f/1.8 leaves little to be desired. It produces a very consistent performance from f/1.8 all the way up to f/8. The center quality is generally excellent, combined with a good to very good outer image field. You can't expect much more from a lens of this focal length class, but it's not standing out either except for its speed. The lens relies heavily on image auto-correction, especially to handle the massive native barrel distortions. These are tamed down nicely, but it is a lossy correction that also costs a bit of sharpness potential. The original vignetting is also heavy. Once again, auto-correction comes to the rescue, although some vignetting remains at large aperture settings. Flare is well controlled for such a lens. We haven't formally tested the bokeh but based on the sample images that we have taken, it is surprisingly smooth for an ultra-wide lens.

It may not be a designated professional lens, but the mechanical quality is actually pretty solid despite the extremely low weight. Sony incorporated decent-quality plastics into the barrel based on a metal mount. Nothing wobbles, and the focus ring operates smoothly. Sealing against dust and moisture as well as an inner focusing system provides reasonable protection against the elements. The dual linear AF motor is fast and silent. If you are into vlogging, the lens is certainly capable of keeping you in focus while moving around. The minimal focus breathing is also a plus when it comes to videos.

One of the most surprising aspects of the lens is certainly its price tag. At "just" $550/550EUR, it's nothing short of a bargain in this class. Third-party options aren't really any cheaper, and the Sony E 11mm f/1.8 is the obvious choice if you are in the market for an APS-C ultra-wide prime lens.
