"Given the non-final state of engineering, I believe it is perhaps a little premature to form a decisive conclusion – however, it is clear that already the 28 Otus has no competitors – and at the expected price and size, it'd better not. The bit that troubles me is deployment: this is a lens that takes up two 'normal' slots in a bag (the 85 can still be shoved into one) and cannot be casually deployed with the expectation of reaching maximum potential. This is a deliberate lens, and I think the images I've shown here reflect that. That means attendant tripod, possibly LCD magnifier and DSLR body, further elevating weight. You can of course use it on an A7RII, the lens really needs a tripod mount (even for a D810) and the weight of the whole combination is putting a risky amount of torque on the camera body's mount. I suppose this is also true of all of the other Otii: though the theoretical envelope of the lenses is about as wide as it gets – any aperture, pretty much any distance. Do we have a new reference king? No question. But like a formula one car, making the most of is going to require a little planning and skill."

 Je ne vois pas trop ce que le module de correction de Lr va bien pouvoir corriger !  ;)

Oui, sans aucun doute, ce nouveau 28 mm f/1,4 est un objectif d'exception qui délivre une qualité d'image plus que remarquable. C'est le même constat qu'avec le 85 mm ou le 55 mm, à la différence que son utilisation est un peu plus facile à main levée.

Ne vous y trompez pas ! Les Otus ne sont pas des objectifs conçus pour le terrain. Ils sont déjà beaucoup trop lourds et encombrants pour pouvoir être utilisés pendant de longues séances de prises de vues à main levée. De plus, l'absence d'autofocus, cumulée à la visée reflex et à l'usage de très grandes ouvertures est un enfer pour effectuer une mise au point précise. Il est vrai qu'avec un 28 mm, l'exercice est un peu plus aisé qu'avec un 55 ou un 85 mm, mais quoi qu'il en soit, il reste délicat.

Pour le reste, force est de constater qu'optiquement, nous n'avons pas grand-chose à lui reprocher. Le piqué qu'il délivre est exceptionnel. Les images profitent d'une netteté déconcertante du centre jusqu'aux bords et ce dès la plus grande ouverture f/1,4. Oubliez également les aberrations chromatiques. L'objectif présente seulement un vignetage important aux plus grandes ouvertures.

Au final, ce nouvel objectif nous a laissés sans voix pour ce qui est de la qualité d'image qu'il délivre, mais nous restons sur nos positions quant à sa très faible polyvalence.

- très bonne correction de l'aberration chromatique longitudinale
- aberration chromatique latérale négligeable
- distorsion modérée
- bokeh agréable
- bonne performance en contre-jour.

Points faibles :

- énorme vignetage en 24x36
- coma un peu trop élevée dans les coins du format 24x36.

The Zeiss Otus 1.4/28 illustrates two things. First: if the optics specialists have a free rein when it comes to the physical dimensions and the price they can construct amazing things which are able to break records in several categories. Second: it becomes clear that producing lenses as fast as f/1.4 is very difficult indeed. Even if there are no limitations concerning the dimensions and the price the chances are you won't be able to correct everything anyway. What's more, even a top-of-the-range lens can have such a spectacular slip-up as the huge vignetting, especially surprising as the Otus is a huge instrument.

Two previous Otus series devices deserved the 'Editor's Choice' badge. We try not to fling those awards around; one serious slip-up or two smaller ones and the lens loses its chances to be given one. That's why the Otus 1.4/28 is the first lens from that line-up that won't be awarded the distinction. Of course it doesn't mean it is a bad lens, quite the opposite. It is easily the sharpest instrument among the wide angle primes we've tested so far.

Finally let me pass over its price with silence – after all in good company you don't discuss money. However, if you want to discuss that aspect in spite of everything check the price of the Leica Summilux-M Asph 28 mm f/1.4 first.
